![]() ![]() ![]() The marriage did, in fact, add elements that drew the two women together. It is unfair to use this lack of communication as evidence of a breakdown in relationship. Some like to say that the marriage caused a rift between Emily and Sue because of the lack of letters during this time, but it should be noted that Emily wasn’t writing letters to anyone and there was an obvious lack of poems (at least, poems that we know of). It could be said that she was making something of a jab at him, because he may have Sue “on paper” but Emily had her in person. ![]() The very news of their engagement ignited what seemed to be a spark of jealousy in Emily, in Letter 110 to Austin she writes “Dear Austin, I am keen, but you are a good deal keener, I am something of a fox, but you are more of a hound! I guess we are very good friends tho’, and I guess we both love Sue just as well as we can.” To put this into perspective, Austin was away at school while Emily and Sue were both in Amherst. Obviously the marriage had a profound affect on all parties, but how so? There is a lot of speculation as to how the relationship between Emily and Sue and Emily and Austin changed upon the marriage of Sue and Austin. ![]()
